Hosted by the Dr Nkosinathi Sishi, DG: DHET, this workshop marks the first step of the development of the second iteration of the Critical Skills List (CSL) to be produced within the Department of Higher Education and Training’s (DHET) Labour Market Intelligence research programme. The Critical Skills List identifies occupational shortages in South Africa and is utilised by the Department of Home Affairs to inform the implementation of their Critical Skills Visa regime.

Scheduled to take place on Monday 1st July 2024, the event will be interactive and centred on the mechanisms and processes to be put in place to address challenges regarding the implementation of the Organising Framework for Occupations (OFO), particularly in the context of the CSL. This participatory learning workshop offers an opportunity for key stakeholders to engage with each other, and discuss the following questions:

  • What is the OFO and why is it important for skills planning and development?
  • What is the purpose of the OFO?
  • Why does the OFO need to be updated and what processes are followed to update the OFO?
  • What challenges do stakeholders experience in implementing the OFO (particularly in the context of theCSL), and how can these be addressed?
  • What steps should the DHET adopt to update the OFO?

The objective of this event is to strengthen the implementation of the Organising Framework for Occupations, in the context of the Critical Skills List. Key stakeholders will have an opportunity to engage with each other, establishing a sustainable network of partner and stakeholder organisations. An expected outcome is that stakeholders can ensure that mechanisms and processes are put in place to address challenges re the implementation of the OFO, particularly in the context of the CSL.
